Bedford sits on the northwest shore of the Bedford Basin, about 18 km from downtown Halifax. It was its own town from 1980 until 1996, when it became part of the Halifax Regional Municipality, and it still has a small-town feel: a waterfront you can walk, busy local shops and a full community calendar, including Bedford Days every summer.

Getting around is easy. The Bedford Highway and Hammonds Plains Road are the main routes, with quick access to Highways 101 and 102 for commutes to Halifax, Dartmouth, Burnside and the airport.

For time outside, the DeWolf Park boardwalk runs along the basin to Lions Park, which has an outdoor pool and splash pad. Kearney Lake, Paper Mill Lake and Sandy Lake are all close by, and the Bedford-Sackville Connector Greenway is a favourite for walking and cycling.

Families have plenty of school choice, including Basinview Drive Community School, Bedford South School, Eaglewood Drive Elementary, Fort Sackville Elementary, Bedford Junior High and Charles P. Allen High School, plus private options such as Bedford Academy. School zones change, so always confirm the catchment for a specific address with the Halifax Regional Centre for Education.

Homes range from older properties near the waterfront and in established neighbourhoods off the Bedford Highway, to newer subdivisions in Bedford West and Bedford South, plus condos and townhouses close to shopping. Lakefront and water-view homes are always in demand. One local tip: if you are looking along the eastern shore of the basin, ask about the blast buffer zone around CFAD Bedford, the navy's ammunition depot, which can limit what can be built or changed on some properties.
